Seeley Great Adventure 2022

Hello family and friends, we’re back!!

Our winter in Florida has been eventful. Between doctors’ visits, golf, boating, fishing, more doctors’ visits, plays and concerts, all wrapped around a bout of Covid in January, we’re getting ready for our second “Around the Country” Great Adventure RV trip (2022). We’ll be heading up through Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Then we travel across Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana, down through Idaho, Utah and Arizona, and finally head home across Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. All in all we’ll stay at 37 campgrounds, spend 78 nights on the road, visit at least 8 National Parks and travel over 8,000 miles. You know, just a short trip!

We’re going to use this blog instead of e-mails like last year. It allows us to post more photos in better clarity and scale, all without causing some of you frustration with the inability to open the pictures at all. 
So simply bookmark the link you’re viewing now and pull us up at your leisure - or not.

Of course we’ll also be documenting the activities of “Tuxedo Elliott”, our Traveling Cat.  His on-the-road-again days are filled with hours hiding under the bed. When the engine is finally turned off, however, he returns to a semblance of normalcy. His favorite perches are the stairs behind the screen door, and up on the dashboard taking in the sites - or more likely, sleeping. But he will have some stories to tell as well.

    Greg, have you considered a second career as a commercial truck driver? You know, one of those giant monsters with like 24 wheels or something? I mean, you could get paid to do this! ( Seriously, it's an incredibly impressive itinerary...a great, fun adventure, and Elliott will be a great navigator while Wendy is doing family sanity checks ;-)

The “Legend People” lived here.

 Northeast of Zion National Park is another area of unusual geographic significance. A Paiute Indian once said “Before there were any Indians, The Legend People, To-when-an-ung-wa, lived in that place.” Paiute Indians inhabited this region for hundreds of years before the arrival of European Americans. A sacred oral tradition of the Paiutes states that the hoodoos are ancient “Legend People”  turned into stone by Coyote as a punishment for bad deeds. Scottish-born Ebenezer Bryce apprenticed as a shipwright. In 1850, the 18-year-old converted to Mormonism, moved to Utah, and married Mary Ann Park. At the direction of church officials, the Bryces became serial homesteaders - moving from place to place helping to establish communities. Robert LeRoy Parker grew up near here

Robert LeRoy Parker was born on April 13, 1866, in Beaver, UT.  He was the oldest of 13 children born to Mormon parents who immigrated from England in 1856 to assist the church in settling the area. His parents moved the family to a small ranch in Circleville, UT in 1879, where they farmed and raised cattle. At 15, Parker began working on other ranches in the area, where he met Mike Cassidy, a cattle rustler who taught him how to use a gun and how to train horses. In 1889, he pulled off his first bank robbery in Telluride, CO, and shortly thereafter changed his name to Roy Cassidy in honor of his mentor.  Later, he took a job as a butcher in Rock Springs, WY, and became known as Butcher Cassidy; shortly thereafter it was shortened to Butch Cassidy. As time progressed, he used areas such as those that are now National Parks to hide out from the law. If you drive from Bryce Canyon National Park to Capitol Reef National Park on Route 89, you’ll come across his childhood home in Circlevill
