North to Michigan
We left Indianapolis and spent the next overnight at Camp Turkeyville in Marshall, Michigan. The park raises lots of turkeys, including a huge one that greets you on the porch of the office at check in - and has the best swimming pools we’ve ever experienced at an RV Park.
The following day we traveled northwest to the Traverse City area directly on Lake Michigan, at the Traverse Bay RV Resort. This was by far the fanciest Park we’ve ever experienced. Lush privacy landscaping, large ponds, fountains, etc.
We spent the next day with Dean and Donna Draper, friends from our neighborhood in Florida. They are very familiar with this area and are spending a month here this summer. They took us on a tour thru the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, comprised of more than 32,000 acres of the Park that have been designated as wilderness under the 1964 Wilderness Act.
The Park has very steep dunes that border the beach at Glen Lake. Note the sign. “Warning: Avoid getting stuck at the bottom! Lake levels are high - the only way out is up. Rescues cost $3,000. Keep yourself and our rescuers out of danger.”
We went part way down, but not far enough to get stuck. Some others did get to the bottom and the beach, but it appeared that climbing back up took quite some time.
After our tour, we headed back to Glen Arbor and had lunch together. Donna sent us off with a cherry pie.
Next, on to Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island, then on to the Upper Peninsula.
Finally! Found the blog again thanks to your email and caught up with the journey. It looks wonderful. You're doing a great job with the pictures! Thanks for sending the link again. I'll probably only ask for it three or four more times...
ReplyDeleteMichael spent many a summer as a camp counselor near Traverse City on the 'big lake!' He's very fond of the area. Christopher and his wife stayed on Macinac Island this past June, with their children and KellyAnn's parents and loved it. Enjoy! I have a nephew-in-law who's a Yooper ~ hope to visit that area some day also. (Is it as warm there as it is here in the northeast?)
ReplyDeleteWhat an unusual geographic terrain!
ReplyDeleteDid I fall off the blog...are you ok...maybe just too busy to write?! Hope all is well.
